Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two volumes of lecture notes, possibly written by a Father H. J. Hagen.  Hagen was a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Belleville in Illinois in 1883. The notes in these volumes are written in German and are on the topics of Church history and theology.  They evidently are based on the work of a German Jesuit, Father Hartmann Grisar, S. J. (1845-1932). How and when these volumes made their way to Saint Louis University is unknown.

The Hope Family Collection contains materials about the comedian and actor Bob Hope and his family’s connections with Saint Louis University. The collection contains photographs of his visits to Saint Louis University, where his daughter had attended college, and correspondence with President Paul Reinert, S.J. The collection also includes two diplomas for honorary doctoral degrees awarded to Bob and Dolores Hope from Saint Louis University in 1979.

Abstract Mr. Patrick McCarthy, former Pius Library staff member and current director of the Medical Center Library, was much involved with refugees to St. Louis from the former Yugoslavia.  Patrick made the acquaintance of Ivo Sivric, a priest at St. Joseph's Croatian Catholic Church in the city. Books marked J.M. were from the library of John Mullanphy and were purchased from his estate by James Clemens, Jr.  James was born 29 October 1791 and died 12 January 1878.
