Scope and Contents

This subseries contains papers and ephemera from the family of Nathan B. Young Jr., including: his wife Mamie (Mason) Young; their children Ira, Jean, and Gertrude; and Mamie’s mother Gertrude Mason. Note that any materials from Nathan B. Young Sr. are in Series 3: Nathan B. Young Sr.

Box 8, Folder 6: Gertrude Mason ephemera, 1926-1960. Gertrude Mason, Mamie (Mason) Young’s mother, was an educator in Birmingham, Alabama. This folder contains her diplomas from the Alabama State Teachers’ College, report cards, and news clippings, as well as her obituary and a copy of her death certificate.

Box 8, Folder 8: Sumner High School yearbooks, 1940, 1942, 1947. Sumner High School in St. Louis was the first Black public high school west of the Mississippi River.

Box 8, Folder 9: Miscellaneous family ephemera. Includes a travel guide of the Mississippi River (circa 1970s?) and Young family biography.

Box 12: Wedding materials of Nathan B. Young Jr. and Mamie (Mason) Young, 1924. Includes copies of invitation; wedding invitation engraved printing plate; scraps of fabric; dried flower; marriage certificate; wedding scrapbook contains gift list, guestbook, and newspaper clippings; and other wedding materials.
