    Muriel Clemens was born in London in 1900, the daughter of physician James Ross Clemens and his wife Katharine Boland Clemens. After returning to America as a baby with her parents, she was educated in convent schools and married army engineer John C. Gotwals, by whom she had two children, Katharine (Kitty) and Mary (Dolly). She became a real estate broker in St. Louis during the 1950s and worked in that profession for about 25 years.
